Primary Colors was one of the most talked about political books ever written, there were 12 first edition printings between January to February 1996, totaling 542,000 copies bringing in $972,385 (The Bowker Annual, 1997). By the end of July 1996 there were 1.2 million first edition copies. Publisher’s Weekly (January 31, 2000) reported approximately 3 million copies sold generating $42,780,000 from multiplying sales by the end of 1999 - in less than 4 years.
